Kunta Kinteh Island is a UNESCO‑listed historic site in the River Gambia, known for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. It contains the ruins of Fort James, which European powers once used as a trading and military post. Today, the island stands as a symbol of resilience and remembrance, named in honour of Kunta Kinteh from Roots.
